Its title taken from a translation of Kafka's short story Ein Hungerkünstler, with the abbreviation of 'extended techniques' acting as a prefix, this piece considers such techniques as a musical form of commodity fetishism. Kafka's titular faster’s fall from master to neglected circus act, seesawing from spectacle to art, struck me as having parallels with musicians and their negotiations with composers and audiences.
